Establishing a relationship with our dogs

We create a close relationship with our dogs based on trust and predictability — so that when they encounter new situations, they know they can rely on us to get them through it.

Creating patterns of behavior through structure

Dogs thrive under strong, clear, and consistent leadership — the kind that leads to freedom, not restriction.

Speaking to dogs via a balanced approach

Our training approach is built on balance and respect for a dog's natural instincts, using clear communication your dog can actually act on.

Our philosophy

Structure Creates Freedom

Dogs thrive under strong, clear, and consistent leadership—the kind that leads to freedom, not restriction.

Our approach emphasizes structure, discipline, and clarity to help dogs move through the world with confidence, especially in real-life environments. By understanding each dog's personality, genetics, and lifestyle, we create a training path that supports lasting change for both dog and owner.

Field trips

Training happens where your life happens

A dog who is perfect in a training room and impossible on Flatbush Avenue hasn't learned anything useful.

  • Off-leash open fields twice a week, reached in our own van
  • Coffee shops, breweries, and restaurant patios
  • Subway rides and crowded sidewalks
  • Everyday errands in the neighborhoods you actually live in

Your dog also learns from our dogs. Watching a settled, well-mannered pack do the ordinary thing is a faster teacher than anything a human can say.

How it works

Three steps. No guesswork.

Step 1

Send the form

The form is the front door. It's how we make sure a dog and a family are the right fit before anyone books time.

Step 2

30–60 minute consultation call

We talk through your dog, your household, and what daily life actually looks like — then schedule your free in-person evaluation.

Step 3

A program built for your dog

By understanding each dog's personality, genetics, and lifestyle, we create a training path that supports lasting change for both dog and owner.

Meet your trainer

Hi, I'm Jordan Phelps.

I've been training dogs for five years, full-time for the last two, working throughout central Brooklyn and based in Prospect Heights.

Growing up, my family always emphasized following your internal compass—your true north. That philosophy shaped not just my life but also the mission of True North Canine.

What started as a simple love for dogs has grown into a passion for creating meaningful connections between dogs and their families.

About True North

Happy clients

What owners say

Since working with true north and jordan, our lovely Vizsla Daphne gets more obedient and smart by the day. She comes home after a full day of training and socialization happy, tired!, and eager to train more. She listens better, knows boundaries, and is better with other dogs.

Jordan puts the dogs first. Has strong principles, balanced training, flexible schedules, and is obsessed with being a better trainer. We feel like family, not just clients.

We love being able to ask Jordan and True north for advice and strategy for our long term goals. We're an active family who takes our puppy everywhere, and Jordan has been working together with us to make sure we get to our training and obedience goals as a team.

With True north you get training and services from someone who has dedicated their life to this craft. The dogs come first and Jordan is organized, balanced, and makes us feel so comfortable leaving our little girl with her any time.

After just a few months we have consistent loose leash walking, healthy socialization skills with other dogs, a puppy who knows plenty of obedience commands, can spend time in any store, coffee shop or restaurant, and knows how to settle down when we tell her to!
